DOD YJM308 Mod
I decided to do an effect pedal mod on my DOD YJM308 Preamp Overdrive pedal. The WARM mod is fairly simple, and changes the clipping diodes. Remember, you are agreeing that you assume all responsibility for your choice to do this work. Please read our disclaimers. They apply here.
Tools and Parts Needed for DOD YJM308 WARM Mod
Soldering Iron
Solder Wick or Solder Sucker (I use a Radio Shack 45w solder sucker very carefully)
Solder
2 - small LED diodes
Phillips #2 screwdriver
10 mm Hex Nut Driver (or wrench)
DOD YJM308 Mod Instructions
This effect pedal mod is very simple. Replace the 2 diodes with 2 LEDs. The result is quite nice. WARM pedal mod steps follow:
- Remove bottom cover using phillips screwdriver. Place screws in secure location.
- Gently pry off both knobs. Place knobs with screws.
- Remove pot nuts using 10mm tool. Place nuts and washers with other loose parts.
- Gently slide circuit board out of where the pots mount. Place the two lock washers inside the housing with the other loose parts.
- Locate D1 and D2 (Clipping diodes). Desolder both diodes using your iron, wick and/or sucker. Caution: Do not overheat! This can destroy components and traces, making a completely different repair problem.
- Gently loosen the diode leads from their mounting holes and remove. Save diodes in plastic zip bag to undo the mod sometime in the future.
- Shape leads on LEDs to fit snugly in the PCB. Place components through holes in opposite polarity to each other. (Just the way the stock diodes were mounted.)
- Bend the leads slightly to hold the components on the board while you solder them in.
- Solder the leads. Again, do not overheat for the same reasons mentioned above.
- Clip the leads and discard the waste leads.
Testing the DOD YJM308 Warm Mod
I usually reassemble the pedal and wait to put the back cover on until after I have tested any effect pedal mod.
Reverse the disassembly instructions and reassemble the pedal. The lock washers go between the pot housing and the pedal case on the inside of the pedal. The flat washer goes on the pot housing on the outside of the pedal case, followed by the pot nut. Hopefully this dialog will clarify the assembly process in case you had a few beers while you were doing the mod!
Plug in your battery or power adapter and test the pedal. If you hear the pedal, and it functions similar to the way it was before the mod, then you're almost done. If there's no output, you need to go back and check your work. Good solder joints? LEDs in opposite polarity to each other? Burn marks on the board from overheating? Traces ruined? Check your work thoroughly.
When all is well, secure the bottom cover and replace the knobs. You're good to go.
Another DOD YJM308 Mod possibilities
- You could remove the op amp, install a chip socket and experiment with different op amps.
- Also, you could consider simply removing the stock diodes D1 and D2 for a simple CLEAN BOOST pedal. No clipping diodes, no distortion...
Ahhh... I see you're getting it.
Good work on your DOD YJM308 Preamp Overdrive Pedal Mod!
